Here, you have succeeded, through patience and organization to obtain the immigrant visa to come to Canada, you have the same rights and obligations as Canadian citizens, except the right to vote and present yourself as Prime Minister (the latter does not interest me much). You will get a Permanent Resident Card valid for five years.

How to become a citizen of Canada and get the right to vote and present yourself as prime minister but also the right to get a Canadian Passport?

In fact, you must have lived in Canada for three years (1095 days) within four years (1460 days) immediately preceding the submission of your application. The Canadian government website provides Internet software to calculate the time spent in Canada to know if you qualify to become a citizen. Note that the time you spend in Canada before becoming citizens is taken account for half of the period spent in Canada, still in an interval of 4 years.

Once you have submitted your application with the list of required documents and forms, you can leave Canada if you want, you will receive an acceptance of your application a little less than a year after. Indeed, after formulating your request, a receipt will be sent in a maximum of 3 months, informing you that your application has been received. After less than a year, they send you an invitation to take a citizenship exam and send you a book telling you what you should know about Canada.

Do not worry, this is not a bad exam with a success rate of 1%, on the contrary, it is a very easy exam with multiple choice questions, like the following multiple choice question: becoming a citizen you can:

1 - Buy a car in Canada

2 - Buy a home in Canada

3 - Vote in elections

And the answer is easy.

Once the review is successful, you are invited to a collective ceremony, with a few tens of citizens coming from different counties of the world (in my case over 40) and then everyone swears allegiance to the Queen of Canada ( the same as England) and to sing together the Canadian national anthem. Then a judge of the Canadian citizenship gives you your certificate of citizenship and voila!

A passport application and 3 weeks after you have your Canadian passport, which opens destinations that were previously accessible to you with a visa.
