Mon expérience d'immigration

My tips

It is important to come to Canada during the summer especially for those who are not accustomed to winter temperatures of Montreal. That way you can take the time to buy boots, snow pants, and especially the proper winter coat. The coats that you had before will not be used in Montreal for the winter but rather in autumn and spring, you should be well equipped for winter. You also need a cover for your head and polyester gloves. Leather gloves are not very efficient in extreme temperatures.

If you want to cook your own food, you'd better bring your own spices, because they are relatively expensive. Be careful while bringing food in Canada because there are very strict restrictions. For example, meat, sausages, are strictly prohibited. If you are stuck with something prohibited while entering to Canada, your luggage will be systematically searched each time for several years, so you'd better be careful.

The spoken French in Quebec is more different than in France. In addition they have words that are not used anywhere else. It took me about 6 months to adapt with their strong accent, which depends mostly on the person. The more you go away from montreal, the stronger is the accent.

Heating is essential and constitutes one of the most expensive bills in Canada. It is highly recommended to heat with electricity rather than natural gas. Quebec is a major producer of electricity so electricity is much cheaper than gas. We were heating with gas at the beginning and we had a very expensive invoice. Speaking of heat, you can have heat included in rent. It is a formula rather interesting to control your expenses.

Speaking of rent, if you have stayed before in Europe, you will appreciate the accessibility of housing in Montreal. You should though forget about the name s + 2, you should also forget about the m2 that is replaced by foot2. The names indicating the capacity of a rent are 1 ½, 2 ½, 3 ½, 4 ½ ... Half means always the bathroom. Regarding 1, 2 and 3 and a half, it gives an idea about the size of the apartment and its structure. 1 and a half is a relatively small studio, just a room with small kitchen ... 2 and a half is the same but has a little more space. It's 3 and a half which contains a closed room with the kitchen and bath room. The 4 ½ contains 2 closed bedrooms and 5 ½ 3 rooms and so on.

Becoming a Canadian Citizen

Approximately 3 years after receiving my landed immigrant certificate, I verified on the internet that I am eligible for Canadian citizenship, and I began the procedure. This procedure is much simpler since you have already gone through the most difficult. It was fairly easy to fill in the form and add a few photocopies of passports and other documents required, nothing too difficult. The cost of this application is about 200$.

Once the application is sent, I received confirmation of receipt of my application about 3 months later. Approximately 1 year after my request, I was accepted to become a citizen and a few weeks later I received the invitation to the citizenship ceremony where a citizenship judge gave me my Canadian citizenship.

I attended the ceremony, I swore allegiance to the Queen of Canada and I took my citizenship and I sang the National Anthem of my adoptive country. I applied for the canadian passport and 3 weeks after I received my new Canadian passport. This is the end of my journey with Canadian immigration.

Immigration application

As a foreign student, immigration services told me I can apply only at the beginning of my final year of studies. This does not necessarily apply to everyone. For example, people who pursue doctoral studies are allowed to apply long before finishing their degrees.

Being in Quebec, I passed by the Quebec government for my immigration procedure.I had to send my application to Buffalo in the U.S. (as requested). I was a bit delayed because they asked me a paper once (which was not on the list), I sent it to them after a month they again asked me another paper, I sent it again. They could have asked me the two papers together but they didn't. That caused a delay of 3 months. It therefore took me about 3 months to get my CSQ and it cost $ 300 non-refundable if you are denied ($ 390 currently).

Once obtained the CSQ, I started the immigration process in Canada. Three months after the Government of Canada confirms the reception of my file. I paid $ 500 at that time to examine my application, once again. not refundable in case of refusal. At this moment of the procedure, you can do nothing but wait.

Approximately 4-5 months later, the Government of Canada sent me a letter asking me to pass a medical examination by a licensed physician (the examination costs $ 120) by the Government and return the certificate to government. I should also pay for these finals refundable $ 900 this time, but at this point, you're almost sure to be accepted.

Approximately 2-3 months later I finally get my IMM1000, certificate that I am a landed immigrant in Canada but I cannot travel with it. I then applied for immigrant card, approximately 1 month after sending the request.

Well, being Canadian immigrant, I asked for the Quebec Health insurance card, called Carte Soleil. This card gives your the right to free health care, as any Canadian citizen.

Foreign student

My journey to Canada began in 2000 as an foreign student. After my engineering studies, I decided to go ahead and continue my studies in Canada. Having a fellowship from my country (Tunisia), I was able to obtain a student visa for Canada. The student visa is renewable every year. After the long queue at the Canadian consulate, I could finally get the visa to go, and at the end of August 2000, I could go to Canada and more specifically Montreal. I was hosted by some people I knew out there for 2 weeks before finding a home in the suburb of Verdun.

I made my immigration application only after a year because in fact the immigration asked me not to make an application a year before the end of my studies. But that's not a rule especially for long research thesis (PhD), which I know some people who have applied and obtained immigration papers before the end of their studies, but you should check with Canada or Quebec immigration, where
appropriate.
